Limburg, The Netherlands

Willem Sophia is a former coal mine located at the Spekholzerheide business park in Kerkrade. In 1965, the Limburg mines were closed. On 17 April 1970, the Willem Sophia mine closed. In recent decades, the mine’s slag heap’ is being depleted and the black slate converted into a combustible red product (minestone) using a natural burning process. The minestone is used in contemporary products, such as terrain materials.

The unique site is strategically very well located on the N299 ring road, which is the connection to the A76 (Maastricht – Eindhoven) and Germany.

Following the successful Berner development on the same site, WDP will redevelop the former Willem Sophia site (about 13 ha) in the coming years.

The images shown below of various options are purely for illustrative purposes. The future plans currently being drawn up are focused on history, logistics efficiency, greenery and sustainability. If you would like to receive more information about this location, we would be happy to contact you.
