On a sunny Friday, September 14, 2023, history was made at Big Box in Evergem, Belgium. It was a day of celebration as WDP, in collaboration with its tenants X2O and Exterioo, along with construction partners and local officials, unveiled the largest interconnected single solar roof in all of Europe.

This monumental project has transformed Big Box into a beacon of sustainability and innovation, marking a new era for the logistics industry in the region.

A Milestone in Sustainability

This project is unique, due to its large scale,” expressed Kristof De Witte, WDP’s General Manager for the Belux & France. WDP has been instrumental in establishing the Kluizendok as a prime logistics location seven years ago, and this latest initiative further solidifies its commitment to sustainability.

A Blooming Logistics Hub

Over the years, the Kluizendok area has seen a proliferation of logistics players, making it a bustling hub for commerce. Alderman Josse Verdegemen, responsible for spatial planning and environment in Evergem, shared his delight in welcoming this remarkable project on behalf of the local government.

Key Project Highlights

  • A vast roof covering an impressive 150,000 square meters.
  • A staggering 37,000 solar panels that harness the power of the sun.
  • A remarkable capacity of 25 MWp, equivalent to powering 8,000 households.

Green Power for All

The impact of this initiative is truly profound. Both X2O and Exterioo, WDP’s tenants, will now have 100% of their energy needs met by clean, green power. This is a significant step towards a sustainable and eco-friendly future.

A Day of Festivities

To commemorate this momentous occasion, partners and stakeholders gathered to savor delectable food, refreshing drinks, and the infectious beats of a talented DJ. As the sun dipped below the horizon, guests were treated to a breathtaking ride on the giant ferris wheel, offering a spectacular view of the expansive solar panels, symbolizing the bright future of sustainable energy.
