Raluca Barbu, Head of Portfolio Management at WDP Romania, is marking five years with the company this year. Based in Bucharest, she spent 25 years on the tenant’s side of logistics real estate before joining WDP, a switch that now shapes how she negotiates, manages tenant relationships and closes deals such as the landmark 2024 Action tender. Here, in her own words, is how those five years looked.

When I joined WDP 5 years ago

Real estate was a new area for me. I came from management, strategy and organisational transformation, and landed in industrial real estate almost by accident. I’d actually been WDP’s tenant before, in my previous role, so I already knew Jeroen and Costin Gherghina, and I’d had a genuinely positive experience working with them. When Jeroen asked me to join the team, I was excited, but also completely out of my comfort zone. In 25 years of career, I had always sat on the other side of the table, as the tenant. It was also important to me that WDP is a family business, and meeting Tony and Joost after I joined confirmed I’d made the right decision.

I can now switch easily between the mindset of the developer or landlord and the mindset of the client, because I’ve genuinely sat in both chairs. I know what potential and existing tenants actually need, not just what a landlord assumes they need. Every experience I’ve had made me richer, and I’m grateful I chose to join WDP. I’m a self-starter, I like solving problems, negotiating and meeting tenants, and I use my brain every single day here.

What WDP means for me today

Giving tenants support and solutions, keeping communication open, and bringing in new tenants. I genuinely enjoy the team. We collaborate well and have a lot of fun together, and even when there’s tension, we laugh it off and move on, because that camaraderie is what matters most. I also value my relationship with Jeroen and Joost: it’s relaxed, open and honest, and we speak often. Having leaders you trust enough to say what’s actually on your mind makes all the difference.

I want us to keep investing in innovation, sustainability, safety and talent, without losing what makes WDP feel like a family business.

How I see WDP in the future

I like the vibe of our company, our team and our mission, and I hope we keep that spirit as we grow, in France, in Germany, and everywhere else WDP is building. I want us to keep investing in innovation, sustainability, safety and talent, without losing what makes WDP feel like a family business. If we can keep growing together while staying true to that DNA, that’s the next five years I’m looking forward to.

The project I’ll never forget

Winning the Action tender in December 2024. I remember the exact date, the 18th of December, because it landed on the day of our company Christmas party. It was an emotional rollercoaster: excitement and apprehension in equal measure, right up until we got the news. We didn’t know until the very last day whether we’d won, and the competition was tough.

Together with Gijs Klomp, I led the project from the business development and commercial side. What that deal taught me, more than anything, is how much stronger you are with a team behind you rather than going it alone. Gijs and I complemented each other well, and the whole project team was well prepared and had worked on this for a long time, so seeing the result land was genuinely rewarding. Our Belgian and Dutch colleagues also supported us with their experience, since Action was already a client there, and that knowledge sharing made a real difference in securing the tenant here in Romania.
