The energy challenge for businesses: Grid congestion and uncertainty

The energy transition is in full swing, but for many companies, it feels like an obstacle course. While the desire to become more sustainable is strong, organisations are increasingly running into grid congestion, rising costs, and a maze of technical choices. Projects are delayed, investments become uncertain, and the continuity of business operations is under pressure.

Grid congestion is one of the biggest challenges of our time. The electricity grid is becoming increasingly saturated, making it often impossible to increase grid connections or return self-generated energy. For logistics companies, property developers, and manufacturers, this not only means higher costs, but sometimes even operational standstill.

The question we hear more and more often: How can we organise our energy smartly so that it supports our growth instead of hindering it? The answer lies in an integrated approach, where generation, storage, control, and market access come together in one future-proof system.

WDP Raamsdonkveer: Pioneer in energy security and sustainability

At WDP, we believe that energy doesn’t have to be a cost factor, but can actually provide a strategic advantage. Our latest project in Raamsdonkveer is living proof of this. In collaboration with our partner Greenchoice Integrated, we are realising a unique integrated energy system here that sets a new standard in logistics and industrial real estate.

The challenge: Peak load versus limited grid capacity

The development of the WDP Raamsdonkveer project began with a significant challenge: achieving a structural peak load of around 200 kW, while the available grid connection was only 69 kW – with no option for feedback to the grid. In a market where grid congestion increasingly delays or even halts projects, an innovative solution was essential.

The solution: Modular Energy Hub and Integrated Energy Management

From the very first design, we opted for an integrated energy approach. The result: a modular energy hub featuring, among other things, a battery energy storage system (BESS) and an advanced energy management system (EMS). This makes the building largely self-sufficient, flexible, and independent of grid constraints.

Core components of the energy system:

Solar panels

Direct supply of renewable energy during the day

Battery energy storage (BESS)

Storage of surplus solar energy for use at other times

Smart energy management (EMS)

Optimal coordination between solar panels, BESS, grid power, and an HVO100 generator

HVO100 generator

Fossil-free and CO₂-neutral, only activated in the event of prolonged power outages to ensure uninterrupted business processes

This total solution ensures that the building remains operational even during grid congestion or power outages. Thanks to the system’s island function”, maximum business continuity is guaranteed.

Why this project is unique

The integrated energy system at WDP Raamsdonkveer goes far beyond common market standards:

  • Maximum business continuity: Always energy, regardless of grid congestion or external disruptions.
  • Sustainable and future-proof: Fully compliant with the strictest sustainability standards, prepared for future challenges.
  • Flexible and scalable: Capacity easily adaptable to changing business needs.
  • Cost control: Efficient use of self-generated and stored energy lowers costs and increases predictability.
  • Attractive working environment: Sustainable design, plenty of greenery, and focus on well-being.

Companies based in Raamsdonkveer are assured of a robust energy supply – essential in an era where grid constraints and power outages are becoming more frequent.

Energy as a driver for growth

The energy transition doesn’t have to be a brake on growth. On the contrary: by organising energy smartly, new opportunities arise. Consider:

  • Battery systems combined with local generation: Optimisation of consumption and feed-in, more return on investment.
  • Connection to the energy market: Shifting consumption or feeding back at favourable times, enabling new business models.

By integrating energy into design and strategy from the outset, unpleasant surprises or costly adjustments are avoided. Proactive energy management is the key to sustainable growth.

Control and collaboration: The power of one point of contact

Many companies get bogged down in a fragmented landscape of suppliers and technologies, leading to delays and higher costs. Together with Greenchoice Integrated, WDP offers a single point of contact: from design and financing to installation, monitoring, and market access. This brings structure, speed, and cohesion to the sustainability process.

For our clients, this means:

  • Less switching between parties
  • Faster results
  • Fewer risks
  • One integrated system that works both technically and financially

Looking ahead: Ready for tomorrow’s energy challenges

The complexity of the energy market will only increase in the coming years. Grid operators predict more power outages and stricter sustainability requirements. With the integrated energy system at WDP Raamsdonkveer, companies are prepared for any challenge – from grid congestion to geopolitical disruptions.

Energy security, flexibility, and control over costs thus become a strategic advantage, rather than a risk.

Conclusion: WDP Raamsdonkveer as the new standard in logistics real estate

The era of isolated solutions is over. Those who want to keep growing must approach energy in an integrated and strategic way. WDP Raamsdonkveer proves it’s possible: a sustainable, future-proof, and flexible logistics building, where energy is not a barrier but an accelerator for growth.
